Hi, I’m Sandra, an artist based on the beautiful Essex coast.

A World I Ignored

If you’d told me ten years ago that I’d be travelling to Panama to watch birds, I’d have laughed. I had no interest in wildlife. At all. I’d lived beside an estuary my whole life and barely noticed it. Birds were background noise. Insects were a nuisance. Organic just meant unwashed and more expensive.

A Late Turning Point
Then I turned 50, accidentally gave up smoking, put on a pile of weight and started walking to fix it. Suddenly I started noticing the birds, so I bought binoculars, took a camera with me, and slowly began capturing these moments along the way. It was so inspiring. I really felt the need to paint these special moments. Discovering this new world was mindblowing, and I wanted to know more.

 Curiosity Took Over
I joined birdwatching groups, went on guided walks and started to learn more.  The more I learned, the more I realised just how much I’d missed.

It changed what I pay attention to.
It changed where I travel to.
It changed what I value.

Now
I paint birds, wildlife and wildflowers in watercolour and ink.  I travel to see birds, plan holidays around wildlife and more recently people are asking me if I teach.  So I’ve begun building workshops for anyone who feels that tug of curiosity, whether you’ve always loved nature or are only just discovering it.   Why not come and join the fun – you never know you might surprise yourself….
